Poor Diet
Bugs Bunny’s love of carrots was always entertaining, but it may have contributed to some pretty serious misconceptions. Rabbit diets should mostly be based on fresh grass hay, such as Timothy hay. This should be supplemented with commercial food and fruits and veggies. The occasional carrot is fine, but Floppy actually needs a variety of fresh produce. Ask your vet for specific advice on this, including safe and unsafe foods and suitable snacks.
Underestimating Bunny Chewing Habits
Don’t let that little face fool you: Floppy is actually a tiny chewing machine. You’ll need to do some rabbitproofing. This is to protect both your pet and your belongings! Some of the things you’ll want to address include baseboards, small or sharp items, toxic plants, plastic bags, clothes, shoes, personal items, and electrical wires. Your bunny will also need lots of suitable chew toys to nibble on.
Not Enough Free Time
Bunnies can get restless and unhappy if they are stuck in their cages all the time. Your furry pal should have at least 4 to 5 hours of free time daily. Make sure that Floppy is getting enough recess!
Poor Housing
We often see rabbit cages that are really way too small. Bunnies need fairly sizable habitats. Your adorable furry friend should be able to stand up, sit down, hop around, and play, without touching the walls or sides of her cage. Choose one with a solid floor, as the wire ones don’t hold substrate.
Lack Of Research
Bunnies are very cute, but they have very different needs than dogs and cats do. It’s important to know about things like shedding cycles, signs of illness, safe and unsafe foods, and other critical aspects of your rabbit’s care needs. Even just spending a little time reading about Floppy’s care needs can make a huge difference. Your vet is also a great source of information and advice. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
